BON BINI WELCOME TO MY CURAÇAO PAGE
This page is dedicated to the memory of my uncle, Emile Kers.
My parents, Soesina Adriana Hensen and Dick Kers, married by proxy in 1946. For those not familiar with the term, proxy means 'with a stand-in' when the individuals are in two different countries at the exact time of marriage. My uncle Emile stood in for my father.
In 1947, my mother joined my father in Willemstad, the capitol of Curaçao, where my father both worked as a translator and technical writer for the Maduro Bank and occasionally wrote for the (then) only newspaper. My mother began working for KMSM, the Royal Netherlands Steamship Co.
Born in Willemstad in 1949, I am known as a yukursou, or 'a son of Curaçao' in the native dialect Papiamentu. Born of a difficult birth in a Catholic hospital, and fearing for my life, the Sisters: in good faith but without my parents permission, baptised me Catholic. As a consequence, my mother, in a fit of post-partum outrage, turned around and had me baptised Protestant. This perspective likely started me on my path to a religion which many choose after an independent search for the truth, the Baha'i Faith.
While my parents were at work, I was looked after by my nanny, Johanita Setoe(?), whom I affectionately called Tita.
My parents divorced and my mother and I returned to Holland in the early fifties, eventually emmigrating to Canada in 1953 with our new family.
One thing or another have prevented me from visiting the place of my birth however, hope springs eternal. Until then, I rely on the net and welcome you to this brief tour.
How did this yukursou turn out? Visit my other pages once you have completed your tour.
